A MAN had to be cut free from his car after it crashed with another vehicle and ended up 20 feet down a ditch.

The accident happened on the B4060 , a mile north of Kingswood towards Wotton-under-Edge, just after 6.30am this morning.

The male driver of a Peugeot 206 crashed into a Nissan Qashqai and ended up down an embankment to the side of the road.

Police said he was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be cut free by firefighters. The man suffered non life-threatening injuries to leg, pelvis and torso and was taken to Southmead Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the Nissan car sustained a fractured spine in the crash and is still receiving treatment at Southmead Hospital.

The road was closed for several hours, causing tailbacks and problems for parents taking children to Katharine Lady Berkeley's School this morning.

It was reopened at 10.30am.
