STUDENTS from a Dursley school backed national fundraising events for the Royal British Legion by designing and selling their own unique poppies.

The poppies, made by students from ribbon, were showcased in an A-Level photography project centred on Armistice Day.

Moria Gillies is the manager of the school’s learning resource centre and told the Gazette how the school strives to be original and relevant in its remembrance efforts.

She said: “Last year we knitted and crocheted poppies, but to help keep the Rednock School’s 1914 to 1918 legacy fresh and relevant for 2015, we decided to do something different – so we made poppies from ribbon.

“They’ve proved really popular, with the majority of staff and visitors making a contribution.

“We’re always happy to raise awareness and money to help the Royal British Legion continue to work with the armed forces and their families.”

A-Level photography students Ellen Cook and Kieron Powell were happy to be involved, using the poppies as part of a photographic project.

Ellen said: “It’s important to remember and it helped us too. Taking these pictures helped us develop our photography skills, gave us experience of working to a live-brief, as well as a taste of what it’s like to work as a professional photographer.”
