CHRISTMAS trees decorated by local organisations and groups will be displayed in Berkeley later this month as part of the town’s first Christmas Tree Festival.

Held at St Mary’s church in Berkeley over the weekend of December 12 and 13, the festival will feature a whole host of festive fun.

Groups taking part, which include Berkeley Brownies, the community library and Meningitis Now, will spend Saturday morning decorating their trees before the festival is opened to the public at 1pm.

Organised by the church, money raised at the festival will go directly to the groups that have taken part in the event.

Chris Smith, part of the organising team, said that although it was the first time the festival had been held they hoped it would prove a great success.

“We wanted to create a real community event for Christmas at the church and I think we have done that.”

Alongside the festival, organisers are asking children and their parents to gather at the church at 3.45pm on the Saturday where a torchlit procession will head off into the town market place to meet Santa who will be visiting the town’s Christmas fair on the same day.

On the Sunday the festival will re-open at about midday until 4pm when there will be a Christingle service at the church.

Refreshments will be available across the weekend.
