A MULTI-million project to build 72 new homes in Coalpit Heath and Iron Acton will get underway in the New Year.

Merlin Housing Society is spending £14million building the new homes to replace 44 of its existing properties in Algars Drive and Nibley Lane, Iron Acton and Newlands Avenue, Willow Way and Bell Road in Coalpit Heath.

All of the properties being replaced were built after the Second World War as a quick solution to the housing shortage but their condition has deteriorated, they are expensive to heat and are now suffering from a number of issues including damp and draughts.

Merlin, South Gloucestershire’s largest social housing landlord, received planning permission for the new homes earlier in the year after consulting with local residents and the parish councils.

And the Chipping Sodbury-based housing association has now appointed specialist house builder Lovell to carry out the work.

Project manager Sally Gilbert said: “Building new homes is one of our top priorities as there is a real need for affordable homes in South Gloucestershire. Together with the homes we’re already building in Coalpit Heath, this is going to provide a huge boost for local families looking for somewhere affordable to live.

“We’re pleased to be working with Lovell again on the next phase of our ambitious project and it’s exciting to think that working will be starting after Christmas. It’s been great to see the new homes Lovell are currently building taking shape over the past few months and we’re delighted that they are on track to complete the 39 new homes ahead of schedule.”

Lovell regional director Kate Rees said: “We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with Merlin and look forward to starting work on the next stage of this important scheme which is making a real difference to the lives of residents, creating smart, energy-efficient, modern homes for local people.”

The new homes are the next phase of Merlin’s project to redevelop or refurbish homes in South Gloucestershire. Work on the first 39 homes being built in Coalpit Heath is nearing completion and the homes should be ready for people to move into in the spring.
