A BUILDER had to resuscitate his new-born son after a shock home birth in February 2007.

With a phone in one hand, Alan Young helped wife Tracey as she gave birth to the couple’s third son, Jaylan, in the family’s bathroom.

But he soon noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around his son’s head twice and the baby was not breathing.

“I had phoned 999 to ask for an ambulance when we realised the baby was coming,” Mr Young told the Gazette.

“Five minutes later, he was born.

“The lady on the phone told me to pat his back and coughed and spluttered and came through. She was absolutely brilliant.”

The couple went to Stroud Maternity Hospital just before midnight, where Mrs Young was told she was not in labour so they returned to their come in Coombe Lane, Wotton-under-Edge.

Mrs Young said: “I was having quite a lot of pain, so I got in the bath at about 6am. I didn’t feel right and knew then that I was going to have the baby then and there. My husband didn’t believe me at first, and he just kept saying no, we are going to hospital.

“Jaylan was born within minutes, I was crying because I think I was in shock from giving birth so quickly. I was not really aware he was not breathing. That was definitely the scariest part for my husband.”

Paramedics and a midwife arrived soon afterwards to find mother and baby doing very well.

The couple’s two elder sons, Liam, 11, and Rowan, 7, and Mrs Young’s daughter Jessica, 18, were downstairs watching television while their mum gave birth.

Despite his traumatic entrance into the world, Jaylan is taking it all in his stride.

Mrs Young said: “Jaylan is fine, he is a very happy baby and well behaved. If anything I have to wake him up.”

She added: “I think I have got over the shock of it now, but it was an experience we will never forget. It is certainly a story to tell the grandchildren.”
