ROAD USERS are being advised to check weather reports over the next two days before they travel following forecasts of high winds and heavy rain.

Highways England has issued a HA Severe Weather Alert for high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes, which are advised to take extra care when traveling, due to the increased risk of vehicles being blown over.

Predictions have been made for high winds throughout the South West of England from 3am to 6pm on Monday.

Police are also advising motorists to be aware of surface water in flooding on roads following heavy rain over the weekend.

Chief inspector Kevan Rowlands said: “Flooded roads can be extremely dangerous.

“Even those with shallow flooding or surface water can cause a vehicle to lose control.

“Under no circumstances would we advise people to drive through flooded roads and instead we’d suggest they find alternative routes.”

Drivers are advised to plan ahead before setting off and are advised to check the Highways England website www.highways.gov.uk/traffic or by calling 0300 123 5000.
