AN “AGGRESSIVE” group of travellers have been moved by bailiffs from a car park near the M48 Severn Crossing in Aust today.

The group, consisting of men, women and children in 26 caravans, settled in the car park of the Brightside Group insurance broker at the former services by the bridge at around 7pm last night.

The group settled at the site after being removed from the BAE site at the former Filton Airfield a few hours before.

Following a number of threats of violence being made by the group when asked to leave, five police peacekeeping units were dispatched nearby.

Steve Wood of Able Investigations and Enforcement, who manages the group tasked with removing the travellers, said: “We have successfully managed to move the group of travellers on after some unrest.

“Some got quite aggressive when they were approached by the bailiffs, making a number of violent threats while my staff trying to move them off the site.

“This morning they even threw faeces at them.

“As a result we felt it necessary to have a police presence nearby.

“We experienced a similar reaction to moving them from the BAE site after they were given until Wednesday to leave.

“But while I sent for more of the bailiffs from around the country to attend, they moved on to Brightside.”

Duty inspector Paul Wigginton said: “We had been called to prevent a breach of the peace on the site, as there are a large number of people in the area who are trying to get on with their day at work.

“But thankfully we haven’t been needed to act.”

A spokesman for Brightside Group said: “Our focus on staff safety remains paramount at all times, and we are happy to say that, aside from a decrease in parking space today, our working day has been quite unaffected.”

Having left the site, the travellers are believed to be headed either in the direction of Birmingham or London.
