A TENNIS club in Thornbury is opening its doors to the community next week in celebration of a £100,000 updates of its facilities.

The improvements at Thornbury Lawn Tennis Club include a refurbished clubhouse as well as the resurfacing of two of the public tennis courts.

The improvements to the clubhouse, which include a spacious, warm and brightly lit clubroom overlooking the courts, a kitchen area, changing rooms, showers and separate toilets, were funded by the club itself, in partnership with Sport England.

Meanwhile the resurfaced all-weather public courts, which are owned by Thornbury Town Council, were funded by the council, club and South Gloucestershire Council.

The club hopes that the open day, from 2pm on Saturday, May 7, will encourage members of the public to visit the facilities by the Mundy Playing Fields, try some tennis and hopefully take up the sport ahead of the popular summer season.

Opening the newly improved facilities will be incoming Thornbury mayor Cllr Helen Harrison and Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall.

“The open day will be a great opportunity for individuals and families interested in tennis,” said club chairman Brian Jordan.

“Tennis is one of the few sports that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.  We hope as many possible come and take advantage of our great facilities.

“We promise a warm welcome, some refreshments, and plenty of opportunity to try your hand at tennis.”
