THE Great British spirit was out in force in Winterbourne Down on Bank Holiday for the annual village carnival and despite downpours, hundreds of people enjoyed a line-up of entertainment and family fun.

The rain held off for a procession led by the City of Bristol Pipe Band followed by the May Queen Jasmine Van Masyk, 9, and attendants Cassie Van Masyk, 7, and Eve Daly, 6, in their open-top sports car.

An enchanting array of mythical creatures followed, in the theme of this year’s carnival weekend, as well as a procession of local Scout and Cub groups who marched to the sound of the bagpipes.

Sue Cessford, from the organising committee, said the streets were lined with people to cheer the procession along its way.

She added: “Although dull and overcast for the first few hours and with the weather reports saying that rain would be arriving around lunchtime, it didn't stop our stall holders arriving early to set up their tables with chocolate and sweet tombolas, bric-a-brac, homemade knitted items, jams and chutneys, jewellery to name but a few.

“By 10am, Down Road, Camp View and the grounds of both church halls were crowded with happy carnival folk buying and selling.

“Entertainment was provided throughout the day including performances from 5678 School of Dance, Morris dancers and the Panama Jazz Band played in the Methodist Hall and again in the All Saints Church Hall whilst delicious cream teas were served and the raffle was drawn.

“Due to the heavy rainfall during the afternoon, sadly the Rainbows and Brownies couldn't take part in the Maypole dancing. Hopefully, we will see them again next year.”

This year’s carnival raised funds for the British Red Cross and a delegate from the charity judged the hotly-contested fancy dress competition and distributed prizes.
