A SCHOOL in Dursley has shot from ‘satisfactory’ to ‘outstanding’ following a visit by inspectors from the Church of England.

Dursley C of E Primary Academy underwent its statutory inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools two weeks ago.

Inspector Daphne Spitzer had high praise for the school following the inspection, which explores Christian values, spiritual development and how those things impact upon the learning of students.

“The distinctiveness and effectiveness of Dursley Church of England Primary Academy as a Church of England school are outstanding,” said Mrs Spitzer.

“Dursley Academy is outstanding because high quality spiritual experiences underpinned by strong Christian values make an exceptional contribution to the children’s learning and personal development.”

Principal of the academy Paul Daniels told the Gazette he was “very proud” of the results – which have helped confirm his belief that the school has created “something special”.

“I feel very proud. I know I lead a wonderful academy and I do believe that we have created something special here,” he said.

“A particular highlight for me was the children speaking so passionately about our values and the impact they have on their daily lives”.

The report highlighted the leadership in the school's religious education department and the school’s unique ‘Together Curriculum’, which was created to help children develop spiritually and morally.

Mr Daniels said: “Mrs Spitzer, from talking to the children, parents, staff and Governors clearly understood the importance we place on being inclusive and that our motto, Together We Shine Brightly, is something we try to live out every day”.

Governor Neil Grecian added: “The governors of the academy are delighted that the recent SIAMS rated the academy as outstanding.”

Following an inspection in 2011 the school was deemed 'satisfactory'.
