A DRIVER who was involved in a collision with a 12-year-old boy near a Dursley school has expressed his fears that Kingshill Road is a "fatality waiting to happen".

The incident occurred on Kingshill Road on Monday morning when the youngster was clipped by the wing mirror of a car.

The driver of the car told the Gazette he was pleased police were planning to visit the school and supported calls for a new crossing.

"It is a fatality waiting to happen and one poor driver is going to have to live with that for the rest of their lives," the motorist, who did not wish to give his name, told the Gazette earlier this afternoon.

"There should be some sort of crossing, or even a speed limit reduced to 20mph. It would mean there was more chance of a pedestrian surviving.

"A lot of the students cross the road there without paying attention."

The boy was on Kingshill Road when he was clipped in the back by the wing mirror of a Ford Fiesta at around 8.30am on Monday morning, suffering minor injuries.

Gloucestershire Police told the Gazette this morning that PCSOs were planning to attend Rednock School to advise students on road safety.

A PCSO will also be patrolling the area outside the school at closing time for the rest of the week.

Since the incident, many people from the area have taken to Facebook to share their views on how to prevent further incidents on Kingshill Road.

Some have recommended educating students to increase their awareness of dangers on the road, with residents in the area suggesting many students do not use the crossing and frequently walk out in front of cars without paying attention.

Others have argued that tighter restrictions need to be placed on drivers, calling for a speed limit reduction from 30mph to 20mph and the introduction of speed bumps on the stretch of road directly outside the school.

Gloucestershire Police, Gloucestershire County Council and Rednock School have each been contacted for statements, which will appear in this Thursday’s Gazette with a complete report.
