A SIX-YEAR-OLD artist from Thornbury has won her school £200 after her art was named runner-up in the regional heat of a national art competition.

Crossways Infant School year one pupil Maisie Scannel wowed judges after entering the “Whatever the Weather” competition, along with her classmates and 1,000 other pupils.

The children were tasked with creating a weather scene for any season and weather type, with the twelve most eye-catching designs going on to be used in a customer calendar by competition orgnaisers and building supplier JDP.

Jenny Wass, JDP’s customer experience manager, said: “We really wanted the children to use what they see out of the window, as well as their imagination, to get as creative as possible, and the range of entries we’ve had certainly shows that.

“They have obviously given a lot of thought to their designs using a variety of techniques and mediums to depict their weather scenes and the overall standard was really high.

“The judges decided that Maisie’s design stood out and its high quality will look great in this year’s calendar.”

Along with the £200 prize that goes towards an environmental project within the school, Maisie was also presented with a £20 high street gift voucher.

Maisie’s teacher, Jenny Miller, said: “JDP’s competition has been a great, fun way of reinforcing the curriculum’s ‘World around us’ topic, which weather plays a big part of.

“We use literacy, music, science and ICT to do this but art is a big focus to bring the topic to life and helps the children add in their own daily experiences.

“We are very proud of Maisie and her winning design, and will be investing the prize money wisely to further benefit the children’s education.”
