HUNDREDS of runners took to the streets of Yate on Saturday to help raise thousands of pounds for one of the town’s primary schools.

In total, 218 men, women and children completed a five kilometre course in aid of St Mary’s Primary School.

The annual 5k fun run was this year celebrating its 10th anniversary and fittingly it raised a record total of £3,591.

Olly Sheppard took the title as fastest runner, finishing the course through lanes and fields around Yate in 19 minutes, 31 seconds.

The fastest woman was Amber Gascoigne in 21 minutes and 30 seconds.

Youngsters Emily Whitfield and Bradley Llewellin took the titles as fastest girl and boy respectively.

Tania Bartlett, from the 5k fun run organising committee, said: “It went really well. The weather came good for us in the end and it was a brilliant event.

“We are so pleased to have raised our best ever total on our 10th anniversary. This money can be invested back into the school.

“Because it was our anniversary we had lots of extras on the school field including bouncy castles, physiotherapy stalls, a brilliant fit camp warm up with Fit Quest, activities and our infamous barbecue.”

She added: “There was also a raffle and we would like to thank all the local companies and people who donated prizes as well as all the runners for taking part in our event.

“The biggest thank you though goes to Chris Hares, who really has run the show. Without him it just wouldn’t happen.”
