CONSERVATIVES in South Gloucestershire have seen a 13 per cent increase in membership since the political fallout from last Thursday’s historic EU Referendum.

The Thornbury and Yate Conservative Association says it has seen a boost of 33 new members in the five days since Britain voted to leave the European Union, with many more people requesting an application form.

Thornbury and Yate chairman Roy Garner said he believe the 13 per cent rise was down to a forthcoming leadership election after Prime Minister David Cameron announced his resignation shortly after the referendum results on Friday.

“I am delighted that we have seen such a big boost to our numbers here in South Gloucestershire,” said Mr Garner.

“I am certain that this is a result of many local people wanting to ensure that the Conservative government keeps on delivering as it has done before last Thursday’s referendum and result.

“We welcome local people getting involved, and those who want to make a difference to our local area and to help support the government as we move forward from the result in a positive way.”

New member Katie Williams, from Thornbury, said: “I’ve seen the great work our local MP Luke Hall has been doing this past year, and following last Thursday’s referendum I want to ensure that Luke and the Conservatives can be as supported as possible in continuing to work hard for South Gloucestershire.”
