HUNDREDS of colourful entries from green-fingered members of the community went on show on Saturday for this year’s Thornbury Horticultural Society summer show.

The warm weather brought plenty of spectators to the event at the Armstrong Hall as entries ranging from flower arrangements and vegetables, to arts, crafts and photography were judged to find winners for the many prestigious prizes on offer.

The day’s top prize, the Banksian Medal, for most points in the horticulture sections was won by the show’s secretary Dot Culverhouse, who topped the flower and plant sections with a slew of top entries.

The prize for the top vegetables and preserves went to Sandra Grey, while Pat Duru headed the floral art classes.

This year’s competition saw a particularly strong cookery section, with a variety of entries competing for the top spots.

The Falfield WI claimed the title in the WI Challenge Trophy, with their member Molly Wedlake winning top points for a WI member.

The children’s classes were headed by six-year-old Becky Latham and 15-year-old Libby Griffiths.

Meanwhile, the handicraft and photography competitions were dominated by Thornbury based artist Honey Camp.

Following the prize giving, the show’s chairman Rex Davis said: “I would like to congratulate all the winners for their spectacular stand-out entries. We look forward to having you back next year.”

“Great thanks must also go to those that ran the summer show for another fine instalment.”

The show’s vice chairman Ruth Kitson followed up by commending the visitors and entrants on contributing to a happy show, noting that although the number of entries were down by a small amount on last year’s show, they were of excellent quality.”
