GIRLGUIDES in Dursley are pleased to announce that the town's annual firework display will return this year after a two year absence.

For the past couple of Novembers, the sky above Dursley has remained dark and quiet on Fireworks Night - with many in the community expressing their sadness at the loss of the long-held tradition.

But Girlguiding Dursley District has now agreed to take on the mantle and relaunch Dursley’s Fireworks Night celebrations as a fundraising event to raise money for themselves and other groups.

District commissioner for Guiding Anne Anderson said: We're really excited to be bringing this event back to Dursley and hope the whole town will support us.

"We're also delighted to be including other community organisations, helping to bring the town together as one."

The Girlguiding group has decided to share some of the funds raised with other organisations involved with the display and The Williams Syndrome Foundation.

The money raised by the Girlguides will be used to provide activities, equipment, residential opportunities and more for youngsters who attend Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section units in the town and surrounding areas.

Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder, is something closely linked to several Girlguiding members and was the charity chosen by the group’s adult members in a vote among other charities linked to the same cause.

The display – which will take place on the town’s War Memorial Recreation Ground on November 5 – will, in addition to lighting up the sky, include some ground effects only visible from the display site.

The fireworks will include two 10 minute displays, the first being a lower noise display and the second building up to the grand finale.

Coates Fireworks will provide fireworks for the events, as they have done in the past.

As well as the display there will be a beer tent and a barbecue, plus hot drinks, cakes and glow sticks on offer to keep the crowd entertained before and between the fireworks. Rednock Swing Band will also be in attendance.

Prior to the Girlguides taking the event over, Dursley's annual firework display was run by Dursley Round Table.
