MORE than 900 riders are expected to saddle up for this year’s Sodbury Sportive on Sunday.

With the success of Britain’s cyclists on the roads and the tracks of Rio, the organisers are hoping for a surge of entries for the sportive’s fifth instalment, which offers participants the choice of three routes to ride – 30, 60 and 100 miles.

Online entries close tomorrow at 7pm, but people can still sign up on the day, which starts at 8am at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club.

Last year’s sportive saw more than 900 people take part in the event, with more than £20,000 raised for charities and good causes – the most raised by the event to date.

“It’s a great day out, a friendly ride and a really good atmosphere for both riders and spectators,” said Stuart Bennett, one of the organisers of the sportive.

“The beauty of having three different routes is that you don’t have to be a pro to take part. If you want a tough day in the saddle then there is that option, but then the 30 mile route is well within the limits of beginner riders.”

As well as the pride of having completed the ride, everyone taking part will also receive a special laser-cut trophy to mark their participation in the event.

All money raised by the event goes to Sodbury Rotary Club who distribute the money to various good causes throughout the year.

Mr Bennett said: “While we are trying to give everyone a good ride, it is all about raising money for good causes in the community.

“We are very grateful to everyone for taking part and enjoying themselves and to all the charities and companies for their support.

“We are proud of all the wonderful feedback we get each year with the sportive and are looking forward to welcoming everyone to taking part on Sunday.”
