A SKATE park in Thornbury has been left damaged after vandals struck over the weekend.

The facility, which is near Thornbury Leisure centre, was littered with broken glass as well as pallets taken from the trading estate and branches broken off nearby trees, which had been used to create small dens and fires under the ramps.

Reports were made over the weekend to Thornbury Town Council, who are responsible for the site, with council officers spending many hours to clear the mess.

The mess and subsequent clean-up resulted in the temporary closure of the park, which is popular with young people in the town.

A spokesman for Thornbury Town Council, who condemned the actions of those responsible, said: “It is disappointing that the actions of a few means that the skate park was out of action during this busy period and that they have damaged the site and facility which will cost council tax payers time and money to put right.

“Luckily on this occasion only minor damage was done to the tarmac, but it still took our staff several hours to clear and make safe.

“The incident has been reported to the police and we would ask that anyone who spots damage or anti-social behaviour at the site reports it to the town council or the police.”
