STUDENTS and staff were celebrating a record-breaking leap in results at Winterbourne International Academy this morning.

This year the benchmark five passes at A*-C, including mathematics and English, jumped massively from nine per cent to 73 per cent.

In all, 22 per cent of grades were at A* or A; over half of all grades were at A*-B. The new ‘Progress 8’ measure was positive, showing the strong progress made by Winterbourne students.

Seventy-six per cent of students got at least a C grade in both mathematics and English.

Academy principal Richard Haupt said: “We are incredibly proud of our students; these results are testament to their hard work; their success is well-deserved.

“It’s been a challenging year for a number of reasons, but the school has been transformed over the past 12 months by the teachers and staff.

“These results taken together with our record breaking A-level results, show we have put the past well and truly behind us and taken Winterbourne back to where it belongs: among the highest achieving schools in South Gloucestershire and Bristol.”

Georgia Denner, 16, achieved an outstanding set of results, collecting three A*s, five As and one B, despite missing an English literature exam due to illness.

“I’ve been worrying because they had to use a mock result,” she told the Gazette.

“But I still managed to get an A* overall.”

Georgia will study Spanish, law, English literature and sociology at St Mary Redcliffe sixth form.

Other high achieving students included top of the class Alex Williams, who achieved nine A* and three A grades, closely followed by Katie Baker who got eight A* and four As.

Ellie Boyle, Hannah Powell and James Labuschagne all attained seven A*s and four As, and Isaac Chilcott received six A* and five A grades.
