LAST year’s GCSE results showed Brimsham Green School in Yate to be significantly above the national average, and this year the students and staff are celebrating another fantastic set of results – despite the national decline.

Of the 195 students who sat their GCSEs and other vocational qualifications at the school, 57 per cent of students attained at least five good GCSE/equivalent passes, including two core subjects.

In areas such as art, music, product design and physics, more than 50 per cent of students achieved A*-B grades.

Kim Garland, headteacher, said: “For students to have attained another fantastic set of results, which at this stage we anticipate being above the national average again, fairly reflects both the hard work of the students, and the sustained improvement of Brimsham Green School."

The celebrations among staff and students came after the hectic morning, where staff were left desperately putting updated results sheets in students’ envelopes after problems with receiving language and BTEC final grades from exam boards.

This year’s top attainer was Madeleine Prottey, achieving 10 A*s, closely followed by Beth McFarlane with nine A*s.

Abbie Walker achieved seven A*s, three As, and one B. Describing how she felt as “relieved”, she will be continuing at Brimsham to study English literature, German, geography and music at A-level.

Samuel Bidder told the Gazette: “I was panicking about English as I’m better at maths. But I got a B and a C in English overall so I’m pleased with that.”

Samuel achieved two A*s, one A, three Bs and four Cs overall. He will also be continuing to study A-levels at Brimsham.

* Contrary to a report in last week's Gazette, Brimsham Green School’s A-level pass result was 70 per cent A*-C this year, and not 40 per cent.
