A RUNNER from Yate is hoping to surpass £250,000 from over three decades of charity fundraising in his final race on Sunday.

Clive Daniels, 70, who is set to take part in this weekend’s Bristol Half Marathon, has fundraised for charity through long distance running over the past 32 years, and hopes to top off his long racing career by reaching the quarter million pound mark.

In order to surpass the amazing sum, Clive needs to surpass £22,000, and having already raised almost £21,000 this year for Macmillan Cancer Support through visiting businesses and residents in the area, he is close to his target.

He said: “I am really looking forward to ending my racing at the Bristol Half. I have always enjoyed the London Marathon, but the Bristol race is a special event. The support you get from the roadside makes it a truly special atmosphere.”

Clive’s first race was the London Marathon in 1984, and has since taken part in 15 marathons and 17 half marathons, including racing in London dressed as Peter Pan for Great Almond Street Hospital.

Since moving to Yate in 1996, he has raised more than £206,000 for Macmillan.

“I always enjoyed running at school and when I gave up football in my mid-thirties, I turned to running for fitness.

“After getting into the London Marathon in 1984, I felt it was the done thing to try and raise some money for charity. I was able to raise £1,600 and it has gradually escalated from there.

“I would really like to thank my many sponsors from the Yate and Sodbury area for their support over the years. They are the reason I have been able to keep going all this time and I am really grateful they continue to donate.

“Many of them have been told it is my last race. Most don’t believe me, but you have to stop at some point, and having knocked on people’s doors for 32 years asking for sponsorship has been a long journey.

“I am sure my wife will be glad I will have more time to spend with her.
