THORNBURY has struck gold at this South West in Bloom competition, being crowned the best in the South West.

In an incredible series of results for the town, the Thornbury in Bloom group not only scooped its 18th consecutive gold medal, having waited patiently for results since it was visited by judges in July, but had also been awarded the class cup, recognising it as the best gold medal for a town of its size.

The group, which is currently celebrating its 25th year, was also presented with a special award for their long term effort and dedication reflecting the effort consistently put in over that time.

The gold rush continued with a surprise announcement that the cup for the best non-municipal horticultural display would come to the town, being awarded to Thornbury resident Jack Ashton’s garden in Church Road.

Four Thornbury entries had made it to the shortlist in the “It’s Your Neighbourhood” award, with the Friends of Filnore Woods receiving a Thriving award, and the top “Outstanding” grade going to entries from the community garden, Daggs Allotments and the tree strategy group.

The icing on the cake however came when Thornbury was awarded the Sponsors Trophy, meaning that aside from the Champion of Champions class, they were crowned the best entry overall in the South West.

Sue Aitken from Thornbury in Bloom said: “We are all really delighted. The results really reflect all the good work people have put into our town over the past year.

“It was amazing to receive an award which honoured our continual work over the past 25 years, a real testament to the countless people who have been involved in keeping our town looking its best all that time.

“It is not just the flowers, everything gelled and came together at the right time this year, both floral design and community engagement.

“When the judges came round to inspect the town, we were overjoyed to be told that it was a perfect tour.”

Praising the community spirit that goes into the campaign each year, she added: “We really want to thank everyone who has contributed in whatever way they can, whether it was weeding, planting, picking up litter or even sponsoring the wonderful displays.

“A special thanks go to our chairman Ed Cole, who stepped in this year at short notice and has really drawn out the best from everyone involved for our 25th year.

“We are really looking forward to 2017, we have some exciting plans for new projects which we cannot wait to bring to the table, and look forward to continuing our work with both Thornbury Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council.”
