FIREFIGHTERS in South Gloucestershire are encouraging residents to test their smoke alarms this month as part of a national campaign.

As part of the Fire Kills campaign, people are being reminded that the alarms can only save lives if they work, offering vital extra minutes to escape in the event of an emergency.

Just two or three breaths of toxic smoke from a fire can cause an individual to lose consciousness or even die.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service say that 34 per cent of the 539 house fires they attended between April 2015 and March 2016 had no smoke alarm present, which despite being an improvement from 41 per cent the previous year, was still too high.

Matt Peskett, Avon Fire and Rescue group manager for risk reduction said: “Smoke alarms really are unsung heroes, activating at the first sign of fire and giving occupants time to escape, especially at night.

“The alarms should be tested regularly to check the batteries are working. It takes just a few seconds but could save the lives of you and your family in a house fire.”

With the clocks set to go back on October 30, firefighters have suggested households use the opportunity to also check the batteries in existing alarms

Residents have also been advised to fit a smoke alarm on every level of their home, and to never disconnect or remove the batteries, instead checking they work once a week.

Free home fire safety visits are on offer from Avon Fire and Rescue Service, with staff also giving free safety advice and fitting free smoke alarms if required.
