THE Warehouse in Dursley has been sold to developers who will build 17 houses and three flats on the site.
Terry Cole, owner of the bar and nightclub in Parsonage Street, bought the former Royal British Legion land behind The Warehouse last year and gained planning permission for 17 two and three-storey houses with gardens and parking and three flats.
The developers Cotswoldgate also plan to convert the empty Warehouse into a part commercial and part residential building.
Consultants Alder King, acting on behalf of Mr Cole, said the property had been sold for an undisclosed sum.
Ten terrace houses facing the road will be built in May Lane with seven houses going on the former British Legion site and the flats being built behind May Lane.
Karl Ward, owner of the Courtyard Health and Fitness, which is next to the Warehouse, welcomes the new plans.
"There are too many empty shops and buildings in Dursley. Anything that brings more people to the town is for the better," he said.
Dursley's Mayor Jane Ball said: "It is a shame to lose something like the Warehouse but it caused more trouble than good.
"Let's hope they are reasonably priced houses for younger people. The more young people we have in Dursley the better it will be for the town."
Cllr Ball also pointed out that a new bar and restaurant and a Thai restaurant would soon be opening in the town, which would make the area more vibrant and appealing to residents and visitors.
Dursley town councillor Brian Marsh said: "I am not sorry to see The Warehouse go. But I hope they keep the face of the old building and don't change it too much."
The Warehouse has been dogged by controversy in the past. In November 2003 16-year-old Natalie Dibden, from Charfield, died falling from an ambulance on her way to hospital when she was taken ill after being served alcohol at the bar.
The Warehouse was subsequently closed but later re-opened for three nights a week. But it soon closed again, with many of its customers prefering to go to the Warehouse in Stroud.
Mr Cole eventually decided to sell the land because it was worth more as a residential site.
Work on the site will begin in July.
