EMERGENCY services have been dispatched to Thornbury after an elderly woman sustained head injuries after falling while crossing the road.

Paramedics and police are still at the scene of the incident on The Plain in Thornbury, which is currently closed off to traffic.

An eye witness said that the woman, who was using a walking stick, had been crossing the road with her husband and tripped on what appeared to be uneven ground and hitting her head in the fall.

Bristol Ambulance Service confirmed that they received a call at 12.50pm after the 72-year-old woman sustained head injuries, with an ambulance crew on the way.

It is not yet known whether the woman will be taken to hospital.
