A SCHOOL in Cam has received a spectacular Christmas tree thanks to a member of staff calling on the goodwill of her former employer.

Lois Portland reached out to gardening company PHS Greenleaf for a special Christmas tree for the Peak Academy, where she is a secretary, and her ex-employer came up with the goods, providing one with baubles, cuddly toys, wreaths and lights.

Lois worked at PHS Greenleaf until February this year and was able call on the help of John Kay and Scott Morahan from the business based in Caerphilly in Wales, which is renowned for its charitable work.

“Working in this school is incredibly humbling – the staff do an incredible job and all the children are amazing,” she said.

“But the school only has limited funds so I contacted my old company.”

The Peak Academy specialises in the support of pupils with social, emotional and mental health issues – some of society’s most vulnerable children – and Lois’ quest for a special tree started when staff got together to look into how they could bring some festive magic to the youngsters.

“It really makes you feel thankful when you look at what you have in your life and realise that not everyone is as lucky as you,” said Lois.

The academy’s principal, Richard Lewis, said: “We are privileged to have the support of many businesses that empathise with the struggles we have in maintaining such excellent support for all young people on our roll.”

Mr Lewis added: “I cannot thank PHS Greenleaf, John, Scott and Lois enough for the concerted efforts to make Christmas feel special at the Peak Academy this year.”
