A MEMORIAL bench was placed in tribute of a well-loved former mayor of Thornbury.

Thornbury Cymmrodorion Welsh Society funded the wooden bench in memory of the late Derek Marson Anthony to commemorate his extensive membership with their society.

John Makepeace, 69, secretary of the Cymmrodorion, said in appreciation of Derek: “He was a very active member within our society, much missed by all of our members.

“Always very friendly and helpful, a very nice man.”

The society placed the bench at the top of Midland Way in Thornbury, picking a scenic spot which overlooks Daggs Allotments.

The bench was fitted with a plaque with an inscription stating his name, birth in November 1925 and death in August 2014.

Derek was well known throughout the town, and became Thornbury town mayor from 1977 until 1979.

He was also treasurer of the Cymmrodorion Society for many years and one of their earliest members promoting the practice and development of Welsh language, literature, arts and sciences.

The society recently celebrated its 50th year and often engages in social meetings and organises entertainment.

Each year on the first day of March they celebrate St David’s Day with concerts and feasts, to remember the patron Saint of Wales, a medieval bishop of Menevia during the sixth century.

On this day Welsh people around the world wear one of their national emblems; the leek or daffodil.

The Thornbury Cymmrodorion are also looking for new members, and anyone wishing to join should contact John on 01454 413751.
