PARENTS of a disabled young man in Thornbury are appealing to the community to help him gain more independence in his home.

Isaac Wide, 21, suffers with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy, and has no independent mobility, relying solely on his powered wheelchair for mobility, making it difficult for him to come and go from his mother’s home in Thornbury.

Due to his disability, the former Manorbook pupil spends all his time at the house downstairs, sleeping behind a curtain in a special bed near the living room, and uses a commode because he cannot access the upstairs toilet.

While financial assistance for those with disabilities like Isaac’s are available, the necessary adaptions have been made to his father’s home, which is registered as his primary home, leaving mother Ruth Rowland and her husband Brice without that support.

Initial plans to extend their home to provide Isaac with his own bedroom and fully accessible plan were disrupted when the family experienced unforeseen complications and were poorly advised.

The setback severely diminished their funds and delayed work to their back garden, which now resembles a building site.

Isaac’s only way of entering the house is a temporary ramp made of scaffolding has been erected at the front of their home.

Speaking to the Gazette, Ruth said: “It's terrible really but at least we have that or he wouldn’t be able to stay with us at all and that is what matters the most,” said Ruth.

“Isaac himself is so laid back he takes most things in his stride, but having these adaptions would mean so much.”

In a bid to help, a JustGiving campaign has been launched by friend and Bristol-based dressmaker Gill Cockwell, owner of Gilly Woo Couture, to raise the £3,590 needed to purchase a specialised ramp that would allow Isaac to enter the house easily.

An amazing reaction from the community, in less than two days, raised more than £2,000, with the total already almost at £2,500.

“We are totally blown away by the kindness and generosity of everyone, it is a struggle to find words enough to express it,” said Ruth.

“Gill is wonderful, it was her suggestion and she got it up and running within a few days, she is such an incredibly busy lady, we can't thank her enough.”

A massive pro-wrestling fan, Isaac has also gained a great following within the sport, which regularly hosts events Thornbury, and will be holding a special raffle for him at their next show in February.

Ruth added added: “The whole family have felt tremendously supported, even the children who now live away from home. I was really embarrassed to agree to it but we have literally no other means to achieve it.

“It means that we will be back to much the same situation as we were before the building work went wrong, which is an enormous relief. I currently dread having to get Isaac in and out the house.”

The family have since been quoted a lower price for a second-hand ramp, which they are considering using the funds to purchase, and have said they hope to put any further funds raised towards “the dream” of giving Isaac the bedroom and shower room that he deserves.
