CHRIST the King Catholic Primary School in Thornbury is celebrating after receiving a glowing Ofsted report following a short inspection in December.

The report awarded the school a “Good” Ofsted grading, and made note of the “inclusive culture” and "high expectations of staff and students".

There are currently 163 pupils at the school, ranging from the reception class through to year six.

The school was commended by Ofsted for having "above average" attendance records and for supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, as well as those who speak English as an additional language.

During the inspection, Her Majesty’s inspector Steve Smith spoke to the headteacher, senior leaders, representatives of the governing body and the school improvement adviser.

He visited lessons to observe pupils’ attitudes to learning, listened to children reading and looked at their work.

His findings were published in a report addressed to the headteacher.

He wrote: “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.”

“You are committed to the belief that all pupils are entitled to the best education, regardless of background or ability.”

“Pupils enjoy their school experience - this is because they feel valued and encouraged to succeed.”

“Their good work is celebrated and they enjoy a range of sporting and artistic opportunities outside lessons.”

Headteacher, Mary Mainwaring, said that she was over the moon with the results.

“I am so pleased with the findings of the report, which I believe are a testimony to the dedication of all the staff,” she explained.

“We were all delighted that the inspector picked up on our culture of inclusivity, which is at the heart of our school ethos.”

“Our aim is to give all pupils the best chance in life, and to create a safe, happy learning environment in which they can thrive.”

“We have high expectations for every child, not just in terms of academic progress but also through personal and emotional development.”

The report also took into account the views of 60 responses to an online Parent View survey:

“All parents who responded to the Parent View online survey agree that their children are happy, safe and well looked after in school."

“The vast majority also agree, mainly strongly so, that pupils are well taught, make good progress and that the school is well led and managed."

“Nearly all parents would recommend the school.”
