PUPILS at Marlwood School spent last Friday getting creative with Oscar and BAFTA winning scriptwriter Bob Baker.

Mr Baker, who co-authored the Wallace and Gromit films and has written for Doctor Who, spent the day talking to students about life in the film industry.

Starting the morning talking to sixth formers studying creative and media courses before working with children from other years, Mr Baker shared some of his past experiences and answered questions as well as playing some of his work, including a short film he made when he was 16-years-old.

An Oldbury resident, Mr Baker is currently promoting his latest work Flora’s World, illustrated by Thornbury florist Lorna Page.

As well as copies of the Flora’s World books, he brought a range of his works and memorabilia to show the children, including a model of one of his creations, Doctor Who character K9, and two eye-catching BAFTA awards.

“It is always a pleasure to meet the kids,” said Mr Baker.

“I do love working with young people, it really gives me a buzz when people realise their potential or see a new career path they may not have realised was an option for them.

“Hopefully through today, I have been able to pass on something to them. I would like to think I have learned one or two things myself!”

The school have said they hope the visit could lead towards offering further chances to work with students of all ages interested in media careers.

Marlwood head teacher James Pope said: “We are always pleased to give our students something extra to their studies, new experiences and the chance to meet people who they can look up to.

“Bob is very much one of a kind, one of those people who you can sit and talk to all day and learn so much from.

“Hopefully his visit can inspire a further generation of scriptwriters to explore their creativity during their time at Marlwood.”
