ANXIOUS parents launched a petition against dangerous parking outside a primary school in Almondsbury in March 1987.

The parents of pupils at Almondsbury Church of England Primary School argued that Sundays Hill, which is a narrow, derestricted road, with only a limited amount of paving, was becoming a blackspot.

While there had not yet been any fatalities, Val Williams, a parent-governor at the school, said there had been several near-misses.

Not long before, the driver of a car parked on the pavement hooked a pram on its bumper as it pulled away and only frantic shouting by the mother warned the driver to stop.

Another parent, Lyn Pike, said that her seven-year-old son Damion was pinned to the wall after an opening car door hit him on the head while he was walking along the pavement to school.

Mrs Williams said that while parking facilities had been provided at the Almondsbury Conference Centre and The Bowl pub, parents were clearly disinclined to walk the short distance from the car parks to the school.

Copies of the petition, signed by 169 parents, were handed to the parish council, Northavon District Council, Avon County Council, the police and Northavon MP John Cope.
