NEW member Jan was welcomed to our WI.

March birthday cards were distributed.

The day trip to Denman had been a great success; Mary and Dawn were thanked for arranging it.

Group reports were given from Book Club, Walking Group, Local History, Crafters and the Luncheon Club.

Members were encouraged to support the quiz group at the Dursley heats.

Richard Osler showed slides and spoke of his time on Ascension Island as part of his RAF career.

He explained its military strategic importance, describing its volcanic terrain as ‘Hell with the fires put out’.

He described the isolation, supply problems, and ways they tackled the boredom of such a posting, including an unconventional way of reaching some of the orienteering points.

There has never been a native population; everyone there is part of the military or communications departments and their supply systems.

The island supports native Frigate birds, hermit crabs, and turtles, and feral donkeys and cats.
