SELSLEY’S only pub has secured a prestigious hat trick with entries in The Good Food, Michelin and AA guidebooks.

The Bell Inn became the first pub in Stroud to achieve this prestigious trio of recommendations.

Their hat trick was topped off in late March after an inspector from the AA’s guidebook visited the premises for an overnight stay, falling in love with the bedrooms and food on offer.

He said: “Hospitality and service provided a good mix of a relaxed and friendly welcome with helpful and efficient service throughout the stay - well suited to the style of accommodation.

“Bedrooms and bathrooms are very well decorated and maintained and provide comfortable beds and bedding and good quality showers.

The inspectors are invited to each premises but their visits remain anonymous and unannounced until check out.

He stated: “Food quality and choice is a great strength of the accommodation,” he recognised that where possible all ingredients were both fresh and locally sourced.

The Bell Inn was awarded four stars for its accommodation and two rosettes for its food – the first pub in the area to do so.

Owners Mark Payne and Sarah Watts, who bought the 16th century pub in 2015, are delighted with the ratings and feedback.

In a statement they said: “It is an accolade to all the team that the food, accommodation and quality of service has been recognised by esteemed publications.”

The couple have further plans to extend the kitchen space and to open ‘Mrs Chef’s gin tasting room’ soon in a bid to keep the venue moving forward.
