PUPILS at Charfield Primary School have celebrated winning a special competition to decorate a van belonging to bread maker Warburtons.

More than 60 entries were submitted by children from three schools, which also included Westbury-on-Trym and St Andrews, to redesign the Warburtons school visitor van.

The van, which goes to schools across the South West to teach children about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet, had paid a visit to Charfield last October and once the school heard about the competition, everyone wanted to take part.

Warburtons school visitors Alice Weeks and Julie Welsh joined their colleagues at the Bristol bakery to judge the competition, eventually whittling it down to two designs.

Unable to choose between the designs from Charfield pupils Lucas and Kye, the judges decided to combine both Lucas’ smiling slice of bread and Kye’s grain of wheat, crowning them joint winners with a design that showcases the key ingredients in the product.

To celebrate the new design, the school was treated with a visit from the new-look van on Monday, April 4, with Lucas and Kye being presented with goodie bags, book vouchers and certificates.

Charfield School’s year four teacher Hattie Lea said: “The children have really enjoyed the healthy eating workshops delivered by Warburtons and it was fantastic to see them engage with the van design competition.

“The whole school got involved and we received lots of amazing entries so it must have been very difficult to choose.

“We were delighted to hear Lucas and Kye had both been crowned the winners, I am so proud of them both, they worked so hard on their designs and are great artists.

“The van looks fantastic and it will be amazing to spot it out on the road.”

Having judged the competition, Ms Weeks said how impressed all the judges were by the “fantastic array of entries.”

She said: “We were delighted to go back to Charfield Primary School to present the award and show the winners and their classmates what the van looks like with their new design.

“Our School Visitor workshops are all about teaching children about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Getting the pupils involved in this competition provided another way to help them engage with healthy eating and the role which bread can play in their diet.

“We look forward to visiting Charfield Primary again in the near future.”
