Fire crews stepped up to save a dog from a kitchen fire in South Gloucestershire yesterday.

Crews from Patchway and Southmead raced to Green Sands Road in Patchway at 4.49pm to find the fire, which had broken out after a washing basket was left on the hob.

Firefighters were able to enter the property and rescue the dog and extinguished the fire using a high pressure hose reel.

An Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said that the incident had started accidentally, adding that more than half of the accidental house fires attended by the service start in the kitchen.

The spokesman reminded residents to make sure they are cautious when preparing food, remembering to turn off the heat, not leaving food unattended and keeping towels and clothes away from heat sources.
