DAVID Drew has been selected as Labour's candidate for Stroud in the general election.

Mr Drew, who represented Stroud as its Member of Parliament from 1997 until 2010, has been selected to challenge Neil Carmichael.

Parliamentary candidates throughout the South West region have now been selected subject to endorsement by the party's national executive on Wednesday May 3.

On hearing news of his selection he said: "It's very unexpected for me to be standing again having said that I would retire in 2010.

"This is, however, a snap election and I am pleased to be contesting the seat for Labour.

"We had other candidates but the party has called upon me as an experienced candidate and I will be fighting to win back Stroud by campaigning over the next five weeks on both national and local issues".

A campaign launch meeting will take place on Friday May 5 at 5.30pm at St Joseph's Church Hall, Stonehouse, to which Labour Party members and supporters are invited.
