STROUD'S current MP Neil Carmichael has been re-selected as the Conservative candidate to run in his fourth consecutive General Election.

Mr Carmichael won the Stroud seat in 2010 with a slim majority of just 1,220 votes over Labour rival and then incumbent David Drew, who he will face again this year.

He was re-elected in 2015, surpassing Drew again by an increased majority of 4,886 votes.

The Conservative, chair of the education select committee said: "It has been a great honour to have served as MP for the Stroud Valleys and Vale for the past seven years.

"This is where my home is, where my family grew up and where many of my friends live.

"I want to continue to serve our communities in parliament and help to shape the politics of our nation.

"Together we have achieved a great deal in seven years: Employment is at its highest, levels in public sector investment are impressive.

"Consider Berkeley Green, infrastructure projects are underway, building on the success of the railway redoubling, Festomane is well established, and healthcare services have been protected and, where necessary, improved.

"These are tangible, significant, valuable and popular outcomes, all proving I care about this area and can deliver for our people."
