LIKE many residents of Chipping Sodbury we collect rubbish from the highways and byways in and around Chipping Sodbury on our daily walks.

As a result, and thanks also to the diligent work of council employees, the town is relatively litter-free.

We each carry a bag, one for non-recyclable objects, the other for recyclables such as glass bottles, tin cans and plastics.

But at the end of our walk there are almost no bins where we can dispose of the recyclable items.

The town has plenty of well-placed litter bins (many in poor condition) but none for recyclables.

As a result the bins fill up quickly with mixed rubbish which I believe is then sent to landfill without being sorted.

The majority of residents of Chipping Sodbury diligently sort their domestic rubbish each week into many different containers provided by the council.

Surely this practice should be carried through onto the streets by providing double bins allowing people to sort their rubbish as they dispose of it.

As some of the current single bins already need renewing this policy could start immediately.

Here is an example, the Glasdon Gemini bin, which could be used with appropriate recyclable and non-recyclable labels affixed (which Glasdon would be happy to supply).

The higher costs of these bins could be offset in the long term by lower land fill costs.
