TRAVELLERS have yet to be moved, after they made camp in a field on the outskirts of Thornbury.

The group of caravans, around half a dozen in number, set up on the field adjacent to Midland Way and Grovesend Road on Friday.

The field, which is owned by the Grey Family, had a gate removed at the time for repairs, with heavy bales of hay in its place to prevent access.

Animals owned by the travellers, including horses, have been released in the field to graze, with residents also reporting that cars were driving in rings across the grass and a fire had been set close to the bushes.

Tom Grey, who manages the Thornbury farm, said that he had been in contact with the police, but was considering employing bailiffs to remove the group.

He added that concern for the fire losing control also prompted him to alert firefighters in the town.

"The damage it has caused me is a mostly unsellable grass crop," he told the Gazette, "which has been flattened, churned up and contaminated from horse manure."

The Gazette is currently awaiting a comment from Avon and Somerset Police.
