YATE Common has been cleared of rubbish and secured with a new padlock thanks to efforts from South Gloucestershire Council (SGC).

A StreetCare team were called to the common yesterday to remove a vandalised caravan and a large quantity of rubbish that were left after a group of travellers vacated the site on Wednesday evening.

A SGC spokesman said: "StreetCare staff attended Yate Common yesterday and again today and the site has now been cleared of any waste. The vandalised caravan was removed this morning.

“We have now secured the gate with a new padlock, and the large rocks will be replaced in the gateway by the end of today.”

The news has been welcomed by local residents, who will now be able to enjoy the common in its full glory.

Yate resident Mandy Sainsbury, said: "I've just returned from a walk at the common, and the whole area looks fabulous.

"The team at South Gloucestershire council and Friends of Yate Common have done a sterling job."
