FOREIGN Secretary Boris Johnson has been cooking up a storm in Yate today.

He visited the town alongside Luke Hall, the Conservative candidate for Thornbury and Yate, as part of their campaign trail ahead of the general election on June 8.

Mr Johnson began his day in the town at the Vintage Birdcage Bakery near Kingsgate Park, where he baked cupcakes and decorated them with an edible picture of his face.

“I’ll give it some welly,” he said, as he churned up buttercream using a kitchen aid.

Owners of the business, Suzanne Jenkinson and Nicole Jones, then served Mr Johnson a traditional afternoon tea, which he described as tasting "better than the Ritz."

Suzanne Jenkinson told the Gazette: "It's not every day you get such a well-known visitor coming into the cafe.

“I will definitely be backing the Conservatives in the upcoming election because they support small businesses like ourselves.”

The duo also presented the foreign secretary with a special Boris 'freakshake' (a giant milkshake), which they had named in his honour.

Comprised of strawberry milkshake, a whole donut and a whippy cream, the drink was designed to look like Mr Johnson, who drank it with relish.

Mr Johnson then moved on to Yate Shopping Centre, where he met Yate residents and visited the outdoor Fruit and Vegetable stand.

He had an interview with the Gazette, where he discussed Brexit, education and employment in the area.
