POLICE have closed the M5 in both directions near Junction 12 for Hardwicke and Quedgeley due to 'concern for a person's welfare'.
Officers closed the road at 7.40pm after being contacted about by a member of the public.
Witnesses state that there is a woman on the bridge which passes over the motorway, though the police could not confirm this.
Police are directing traffic off from the M5 at Junction 12 and considerable congestion is expected as a result.
It is not yet known when the motorway will be reopened.

All three lanes were reopened just before 9pm, over an hour after the police became aware of the incident.
