A JUNIOR squash club in Thornbury has been paid a special visit by the town’s mayor to help raise awareness for the activity.

Cllr Helen Harrison met with members of Thornbury Squash Club, who train at Thornbury Leisure Centre, having found out they were not known to the youth project scheme.

During the visit, she joined players on court to find out a little more about what they do and how the sport keeps them active.

She told the Gazette: “Thornbury Squash club provides a great opportunity for young people to try out another sport that they maybe don't normally get much access to.

“In these days when we hear so much about the increasing inactivity of young people, it was really good to see the enthusiasm, skill, and peer encouragement from the lads as they played.”

Tim Miller, the club’s organiser for the past two years, said: “It was great to see Helen on court.

“Hopefully this can give junior squash more exposure in the area and show people what a fun game squash is for all ages.”
