TWO PE teachers at a school in Chipping Sodbury School have set up a new sports camp with the view to encourage children to keep active in the summer holidays.

Jon Bowden and Chris Whitfield are the creators of The Hero Academy, a five-day sports activity camp that will take place during the six week holidays for children between the ages of 6 and 12.

Chris said: “As experienced PE teachers, keen sports people and parents, we are passionate about the huge benefits sport brings to all aspects of life.

“The Hero Academy encourages our ‘little heroes’ to be co-operative, brave, resilient and proud of themselves.

“Each day will be totally different and our little heroes will take on challenges based on superhero qualities throughout the week.”

A typical day at the Hero Academy will include a variety of team sports such as rounders and dodgeball, in addition to “hero skills training” – which involves the children practicing their flight, strength, flexibility, logic and speed.

There will also be a variety of team activities and competitions, as well as a chance to cool down and reflect on the day with a log book and stickers.

Children do not need to be gifted at sports to take part in the camp, according to Chris.

He said: “The Hero Academy is not focused on the best athletes or sporting excellence as we believe everyone can become a hero.”

He added that the camp will suit parents who work, as the drop off opens at 8am each day with pick up between 4.30 and 5pm.

In the run up to the launch of the academy, Jon and Chris will be running free taster sessions in primary schools across Yate, Chipping Sodbury and the surrounding villages. Those interested in having a Hero Academy visit should get in touch by emailing hello@theheroacademy.co.uk.

The Hero Academy runs from Monday, July 31 to Friday, August 4 at the Chipping Sodbury School Sports Centre. For more information, visit the Hero Academy website
