FUNDS raised at the ever-popular Slimbridge Beerfest have helped support dozens of cub scouts to attend a national jamboree.

The week-long Cubjam event which enables youngsters from across the country to meet was attended by 36 cubs from Cam, Dursley and Sharpness groups along with eight leaders after money was provided to help cover the cost of transport.

About 1,500 cubs attended this year’s event, which had a ‘wild west’ theme, taking part in a range of activities from crafts to climbing.

Attendees also had the opportunity to meet Bear Grylls – the chief scout – before taking part in a carnival procession and picnic to celebrate 100 years of cub scouts to conclude the jamboree.

Cub scout leader, Jo-Anne Hutchinson, who accompanied the cubs, said: “The cubs loved being able to see Bear Grylls and Steve Backshall [cub ambassador] as well as taking part in many activities.

“Our week included a visit to Whipsnade Zoo. The day we went it rained and rained but our amazing cubs walked miles and didn't complain once.

“Slimbridge Beerfest funds paid for a coach to the event, assisting cub scout families with the costs of their children attending.

“The contribution from the beerfest was invaluable helping ensure that the cost to families was kept as low as possible enabling more cubs to attend.

“All the group benefited from attending and returned with memories to last a lifetime and a better understanding of what being a cub means.”

Slimbridge Beerfest is an annual event raising funds for scouts groups in the area.

The event is held in the grounds of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust and this year it will take place on Saturday, June 24.
