PLANS to build retirement homes on land that was promised to be used as a community building have been announced.

Churchill Retirement Living is currently consulting residents on a new proposal to build a number of one and two bedroom apartments on land East of Normandy Drive.

It is not yet clear exactly how many properties are in the works.

The new proposals come as a blow to local residents and councillors, who successfully campaigned against a previous attempt by Taylor Wimpey to build homes on the site.

"We have fought hard to stop this land being built over completely, it was meant to be used by the community," said Cllr Ruth Davis, making reference to the original master plan for the old Sea Stores site, which included a community arts venue.

"There has been no discussion with local councillors about these latest plans."

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Thornbury and Yate Claire Young has also voiced her opposition to the propsals.

She said: "People in the area have told me there is nowhere else for their children to play games locally without crossing busy roads, and parking on the narrow streets is also a massive issue.

"It is vital local people have their say in what the land is used for."

The developer's consultation on the proposal runs until June 14.

Andrew Burgess, Churchill’s Group Land and Planning Director, told the Gazette that the proposal will "go some way towards meeting the urgent need for private retirement housing in Yate and the surrounding area".

He added: "The land is not protected as open space by any existing planning policy. It is a windfall housing site that will contribute towards the council’s five year housing land supply, which is currently in deficit.

“As well as meeting the urgent need for older people’s housing, our planned development will bring benefits to the local economy. Owners will be within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and other amenities in the town, helping to boost local businesses.

“Our planning consultation is currently in progress and we look forward to receiving the comments of local people.”
