FOR South Gloucestershire residents who like a challenge, this year’s Tough Mudder still has some places available.

The famous endurance test, which sees participants attempt a brutal 10-12 mile obstacle course, is set to take place on Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20 at The Badminton Estate.

This year’s obstacles include a new claustrophobia inducing ‘August Gloop’ (which is described as climbing up a waterfall inside a mine shaft) and an ‘Arctic Enema’  (where participants plunge head-first through a tight, dark tube into ice-cold water).

Even the finish line is set to be a challenge - with the final obstacle being an ‘Electroshock Therapy’, rows of dangling wires that pack a punch of 10,000 volts.

Alex and her partner Ed, from Malvern, have been tough enough to take on the challenge previously.

Alex said: “Tough Mudder - the name says it all, it was very tough.

"I lost count of the number of times I questioned how I was going to complete the course, but we survived and actually managed to get round in a reasonable time.

"We were both a little battered and bruised, but nothing broken.”

Meningitis Now, the UK's largest meningitis charity, have several spaces available for people who think they are tough enough to complete the race.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “Although not compulsory, the challenge is a great opportunity to raise money.

"You must know someone who would pay to see you get covered in mud and electrocuted.”

Meningitis Now is working towards a future where no one in the UK loses their life to meningitis and everyone affected gets the support they need.

It does this by funding research into vaccines and prevention, and raising awareness of meningitis symptoms.
