A GROUP of youngsters were able to learn the ropes of model boating this week thanks to the generosity of a local group.

Members of the Yate and Sodbury Model Boat Club invited around 30 members of the local Boys’ Brigade to join them at Kingsgate Park on Monday.

The boys were able to learn more about model boats, and even got the chance to sail them on the open water.

Derek Battson, Secretary of the Yate and Sodbury Model Boat Club, said that the visit was enjoyable for all involved.

He said: “The boys came to see a static display about one year ago and that made them interested in the boats.

“We thought it would be nice to let them have a go at steering them out on the water and Monday was the perfect day for it.”

Both the Boys’ brigade and the model boat club meet at Yate Methodist Church each Monday, so frequently cross paths.

Simon Crocker, Captain of the Boys’ Brigade, said: “We first saw the boats on dry land as part of a display so it was good to see them in action on the water.

“The boys had a really good night thanks to Derek and the model boat club, who were absolutely brilliant with them.”

Yate Boys’ Brigade meet at Yate Methodist Church at 6.30pm every Monday during term time.

The group is open to all boys aged five and over and is always on the lookout for new members.
