THE headteacher of a Dursley school says it is prepared to take over complete control of a sports centre following a proposal to remove council subsidies for the facility.

Stroud District Council is set to decide whether to not renew its agreement with Rednock School to help fund the facility in order to cut its “growing deficit position” at the meeting of its community services and licensing committee meeting on Tuesday.

The committee will also be considering whether to terminate similar agreements with Thomas Keble and Maidenhill schools.

It follows similar measures which saw Wotton Sports Centre transferred to Sport Wotton Ltd and the handing back of Nailsworth Recreation Centre and Wotton Pool.

The council is able to withdraw from its agreement with Rednock in August, leaving it in the full control of the school.

Rednock headteacher, Dave Alexander, said that they would keep the centre open even if council subsidies were withdrawn.

Speaking to the Gazette, he said: “We would have to take the sports centre over entirely.

“We do have some expertise in this area but would need to cost the offer.

“We would keep the centre open for the benefit of the community and the students.

“As we are a community-orientated school, we would look to include the community in enjoying the opportunities afforded by the sports centre.

“We have always worked well with Stroud District Council and with the community centre itself.

“We would seek to continue any existing relationships as well as pursue others in order to make the centre as welcoming and accessible as possible.”
