MAJOR bridge replacement work on the A38 near Berkeley will be concluded on Thursday.

Although the traffic lights were removed over the weekend the signals will return briefly to allow for contractors to put the final touches on the £2.5million project.

Tomorrow morning lights will be put up again for a final time to allow for resurfacing and line-painting work to be completed.

They will be removed for the final time on Thursday afternoon bringing to a close the year-long project.

The old northbound bridge, which was deemed to be weak following a routine inspection in 2013, has been completely replaced in the project.

Initially due to finish in November, work overran by seven months but will finish on Thursday.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member responsible for infrastructure at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “This has been a major project involving highways, rail operators and utilities companies.

“Moving the old bridge was a fantastic bit of engineering work requiring time and skill to plan and install.

“That new structure is now in place and we have made improvements to the road layout in the area ahead of the completion.

“I would again like to thank everyone for their patience whilst the work has taken place.”
